The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Respecting the decision, the Dutch foreign minister said that Netanyahu will be arrested as soon as he sets foot on Dutch soil.
Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said this in parliament on Thursday (November 21) local time.
In addition to Netanyahu, the Netherlands will not have any unnecessary contact with former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif, Veldkamp said. He said that the Netherlands will remain with the Rome Statute.
The 'Rome Statute' of the International Criminal Court is a treaty. It was adopted on July 17, 1998 at a diplomatic conference in Rome, Italy. It entered into force on July 1, 2002. As of February 2024, 124 countries are parties to the treaty. These countries can arrest someone if they have an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court against them.
Although Netanyahu has no plans to visit the Netherlands, the Dutch foreign minister will soon visit the Middle East.
