The United States again vetoed a resolution on a Gaza ceasefire agreement on Wednesday (November 20). As a result, the ceasefire agreement was stalled again due to the United States. AFP news agency reported.
Washington said that if the ceasefire resolution is passed now, Hamas fighters will be encouraged. As a result, the hostage rescue will become much more difficult.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood said, "This ceasefire resolution will bring a terrible message to Hamas. Because unless there is a compromise at the negotiating table to rescue the hostages, the hostages will never be released."
The United States, strongly criticizing other members of the Security Council in this vote held on Wednesday, said that efforts to reach a compromise on the resolution have been thwarted. The resolution was vetoed by 10 of the 15 permanent members of the Security Council.
It calls for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. At the same time, it demands the release of the hostages. However, the United States, as the only permanent member, blocked the resolution by exercising its veto power.
The US ambassador said, "The international community has forgotten about the Israeli prisoners in Gaza. But we cannot let that happen. We cannot forget the hostages."
Meanwhile, while international efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza continue, the US veto is seen as a major obstacle to resolving the crisis. This has deepened the differences between the council's member states.
AFP says that the ceasefire proposal was the result of weeks of discussions. The 10 elected member states of the Security Council raised the proposal.
This is the fourth time since October 2023 that the US has vetoed a Gaza ceasefire proposal in the Security Council.
